This educational session focuses on the sales and use tax issues unique to restaurants, including taxable versus non-taxable food and beverage sales, dine-in and take-out transactions, delivery platforms, alcohol, service charges, and gratuities. Attendees will learn how to manage use tax on purchases, avoid common audit pitfalls, and identify refund and cost-saving opportunities. Practical guidance is provided to help restaurants stay compliant while minimizing unnecessary tax exposure.

Joan Armenta-Roberts has more than 30 years of sales and use tax experience, both in the private sector and through her work as a top advisor to State Board of Equalization Member Dean Andal, who chaired the BOE in the late 1990s and successfully implemented pro-taxpayer reforms. Joan’s experience includes more than 18 years with PwC and KPMG, two of the Big Four accounting firms, and has been running ARC Sales Tax Consulting since 2019. Joan also works for the California Taxpayers' Association (CalTax) on a part-time basis, as a Sales Tax Consultant.
